A letter to your future self, a sentiment to share with another for a distant date, what treasures could emerge from a pocket? In this workshop we will discover opportunities for creating folded vessels full of pockets that are perfect for holding memos, seasonal aspirations, memories, poems, recipes, business cards, pressed flowers…truly limitless possibilities. We will create two different accordion format structures adapted from Hedi Kyle’s book, The Art of the Fold. Each varied hand-sized book will contain pocket openings for holding treasures. One special attribute of these books is that they are no-sew, no-glue and are bound using a few simple tools. Each book will feature a unique cover wrapper—one which hugs and protects like a warm envelope sweater and the other a school-book style wrap-around with pleated tab closure. We will begin by practicing on light-weight paper, then advance into using a strong duo-surface paper which is inviting to the touch, perfect for folding, and suitable for embellishing. Our pocket-inserts will be created from card-weight paper and if desired, time will be allotted for adorning with stamps, pens, markers, and gouache. All materials and tools will be provided. Completely optional, participants are welcome to bring mementos to include in the books, the size should be 2.5 x 4.5 or smaller, or have the ability to fold / trim to corresponding pocket sizes.
