The lettering work of David Jones (1894-1974) and Ben Shahn (1898-1969) celebrate both classical Roman letterforms and the idea of “perfectly imperfect.” In this class, we will look to formal, classically proportioned capitals as well as the wildly inventive and quirky letters of Jones and Shahn as inspiration for drawing our own letters. We will then make simple stencils of our letters, which we will use to hand-print greeting cards, postcards, or a simple accordion book. This all-levels class is perfect to take if you’re interested in hand-lettering or simply want to spend a fun morning creating.
