The carousel book is a multi-dimensional showstopper featuring a series of panoramic vignettes. These structures are adapted from the accordion format and date back to the early 1930s. Carousel books are constructed using multiple layers of different proportions and strategic cut-outs that provide interactive viewing opportunities. In this workshop, we will begin with two different model versions: a single-segment and a multi-segment, then transition into a final book filled with content that conveys a story or is thematic in nature.
Prior to the workshop, participants will receive an email with additional information and inspiration, including image examples of the models we will be making.
Please bring an X-acto knife and extra blades as well as a cheap paint brush for glue. It is also wonderful, though not necessary, to bring items that you might use to create imagery in your book, such as decorative or patterned papers, old or new letters, typewritten notes, ephemera, advertisements, maps, junk mail, seed packets, stamps, or discarded book pages. You might also bring markers, pencils, watercolor, or gouache and ribbons or thread.
