Not So New! But Improved!
6th Dec 2023
"Growing pains" is a phrase I used to always associate with the young. Bodies bursting out of their bounds as small kids expand and unfurl in miraculous ways. The heartaches of lost friendships or unrequited crushes as you develop your own relationships and learn hard lessons from them.
But being, now, middle-aged with a business under my belt that's approaching ten years old, I know that growing pains never fully stop. They just acquire more subtlety. A weird muscle cramp. A stiff back. Little twinges that simply ask for steady maintenance. Like stretching. I stretch in the mornings now! And man, that's five of the best minutes of my day.
Similarly, this shop is no longer in its infancy. The growing pains are no longer immense like desperately needing more employees or to build anything major or wildly bulk up any particular category. We're pretty much at full capacity with our retail space. We've got a great team in place. It feels like a going concern that no longer needs constant feeding and supervision but, rather, regular maintenance. Tweaks here and there to make a good thing function better for all of us.
Which is what we've tried to accomplish with this website refresh! We didn't love how our products presented on the old site, with images that required a downward scroll rather than a static gallery space that you could page through. We've freshened up our category organization, updated our About page (with all of our employees finally represented!), and otherwise dusted off the site in the hopes it will provide a stronger online shopping experience moving forward. There is truly no end to the hours you could spend getting a website ready for re-launch, but we are opting to get it up and out there, so please reach out if you find a problem! We expect we will find some glitches, and we plan to spend a little time every day stretching the ol' girl out, so the goal is to make it a little bit better day by day. And we've got some serious online inventory onboarding to do, so be on the lookout in weeks ahead for a more comprehensive shop experience.
Since opening Postscript, I have always prioritized the brick and mortar. This shop is so centrally about people and community that that is where my heart was. But as customers from far and wide have found us and visited over the years, it has grown more important to me to try to establish a stronger online space that does a better job of representing what's here. Many a person have said they wish there were a shop like this where they live, and we want to serve those customers, too! It's never going to be the same as hearing a little sleigh bell jingle as you walk in the door and the old wood floor creak underfoot--we'll never be able to send a cardamom latte through the mail--but! We can promise we will bring the same care and love to packaging and sending forth your treasures as we do in the shop, and if there's one thing we really believe in, it's mail! So we'd be pleased as punch to send you some.
Huge thanks to Tatyana for her exceptional attention to detail and the many hours she invested in this refresh! And to Liz, who does the coolest product photography and inventory maintenance. If I were trying to deliver an online shopping experience on my own, let's be honest: I would just order myself Thai takeout and commit myself more wholly to the Luddite life. So grateful to have them at the helm of this big job!
