One of my all-time-favorite picture books, The Mighty Lalouche, by Matthew Olshan, tells the story of a small French mail carrier who loses his job at the dawn of electric autocars. In need of employment fast, Lalouche tries his hand as a boxer, with unexpected and utterly delightful results.
The illustrations, done by the unparalleled Sophie Blackall, feature a combination of watercolor paintings and paper cut outs that cast gorgeous shadows throughout the book.
An endlessly clever story, this charming book will forever have a place in my library!
