Love and Longing

Mailings

IMG_7862Now that my Valentines have reached their destinations, I can finally share this year's project!  Every other year now for several years, I've been creating a song mix called "Love and Longing," featuring songs about heartbreak and happiness.  For the first time this year, I made cases for the CDs, in part because I had originally intended to letterpress-print the song titles.  That didn't happen -- best laid schemes, and all -- but I love the cases all the same.  I would love to make these for every person in my life, but I stuck with an edition of 25 that went out to good friends. IMG_7851 IMG_7839I used Johannot paper and cut 5.5" strips, which I then folded into three panels to fit around a CD.  I created a template for the shape of the envelope flap and cut accordingly and was able to turn the reverse-flap shape into a sleeve for the CDs that I glued to the middle panel of the case.  Then I poked holes near the tip, inserted some twine, fed that through a little heart closure, and voila! IMG_7842 IMG_7868 IMG_7844I ended up printing the song titles onto a French chipboard and then adhering them to the bottom panel, then finishing them off with a personal message. IMG_7870And for good measure, I tried to pretty the envelopes up with some Roman caps, since I always need practice with those.  Plus, I can do those in bed with a Sharpie! IMG_7880 IMG_7872This year, the song list was as follows:
  1. I Never Knew You by The Avett Brothers
  2. Cryin' in the Morning by White Russian Doll
  3. How by Regina Spektor
  4. I'm Through by Ingrid Michaelson
  5. Miss Atomic Bomb by The Killers
  6. Does Not Suffice by Joanna Newsom
  7. Passage by Exitmusic
  8. Lucky Now by Ryan Adams
  9. We are Fine by Sharon van Etten
  10. A New Life by Jim James
  11. Emmylou by First Aid Kit
  12. Shell Game by Bright Eyes
  13. Ho Hey by The Lumineers
  14. I Found You by the Alabama Shakes
  15. Will You Still Love Me? by Math and Physics Club
  16. That's What's Up by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
It is true that nothing stirs my heart like love poetry, but music is another kind of poetry to me.  I am almost embarrassed to admit how invested I become in these playlists... I listen to them dozens of time until the arc of the songs feels just right, until the mood of the songs carries me right along with it.  Several of these songs are new to me as I dug around for the right songs to include, and I would like to go on and on about them, but they're worth a listen if any of them are new to you, too.  Thanks to hubby for burning all of the CDs, to my friend, Deb, for introducing me to song #6, and to my cousin, Carrie, for introducing me to First Aid Kit.  They were perfect additions! What are your favorite love songs?  If you made a mix like this, what would be on it?  I always love to get new recommendations!
